“Alojamento Local” is finally back in 2024: All You Need to Know

November 2024 brings significant changes to the Alojamento Local (AL) landscape in Portugal.

Starting November 1, 2024, Portugal has loosened its grip on short-term rentals, reversing some of the stricter rules introduced in 2023. These changes to the Alojamento Local regulations represent a significant shift in Portuguese housing policy, and are good news for property investors in the Algarve.

The changes allow condominium residents to vote on whether to permit short-term rentals in their buildings, restoring the rights of existing licence holders and opening up new licence applications in many municipalities. For buyers considering an Algarve property as a rental investment, this is a significant green light.
