It's a Tuesday evening in February. You've swum your lengths in the indoor pool downstairs and sat ten minutes in the sauna. Now you're up on the roof with a glass of wine, watching Lagos light up below you while the bay turns from blue to silver. Most people only get evenings like this in July.

This two-bedroom apartment sits on the top floor of a 2009 condominium in Cerro das Mós, on the hill just above Lagos. Above it is the apartment's own 80 m² private roof terrace, with an all-round view: the Serra de Monchique on one side, the Bay of Lagos and the Atlantic on the other, and the whole town in between.

Inside, the living and dining room flows into a white kitchen with dark worktops, a built-in oven and microwave column and an American-style fridge. Sliding doors open onto a glazed balcony. With the glass closed it's a sunroom for winter lunches. Slide it open and it becomes a dining terrace looking out over the treetops. LG multi-split air conditioning heats and cools every room, solar thermal panels cover most of the hot water, and insulated walls and roof are how a 2009 building earns an energy certificate B.

The two bedrooms both have fitted wardrobes. The main bedroom is bright and quiet, and the second is currently set up as a snug TV room, so it works just as well as a guest room or a home office. There are two bathrooms in warm cream tiling with vessel basins: one with a bathtub, the other with a walk-in rain shower.

Then the stairs take you up to the roof. It's set up as an outdoor living room: an artificial lawn that stays green through August, a sail shade, sun loungers and a bar counter facing the view. Morning coffee with Monchique in the mist, sunset drinks over the town.

The condominium was built when developers still gave space away. Residents share an indoor pool for the cooler months, an outdoor pool set in landscaped gardens, a gym, a games room, a sauna and a steam room. A lift runs from the underground garage, where the apartment has its own parking space and a storage room.

Lagos old town and the marina are about five minutes by car. The beaches at Porto de Mós and Meia Praia are around ten minutes away, and Faro airport is about an hour on the A22.
