Portugal, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning scenery, beckons visitors from across the globe. Whether you’re dreaming of a short holiday, an extended stay, or even making Portugal your permanent home, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. Let’s explore the different visa options available for entering and staying in Portugal, including the popular Golden Visa program.

Important update, May 2026. Portugal’s new Nationality Law came into force on 19 May 2026. The minimum residency period before applying for Portuguese citizenship has increased from 5 years to 10 years for most nationalities, and 7 years for EU and CPLP (Portuguese-speaking) citizens. The residency clock now starts from the date your residence permit is issued, not from the date you applied. Applications already pending before 19 May 2026 are still assessed under the old 5-year rule. The Golden Visa, D7, D8, and other residency permits themselves are not affected. Only the path to citizenship is longer.

Short-Stay Visas (Schengen Visa)

  • Purpose: Tourism, business trips, family visits, or other short stays up to 90 days within 180 days.
  • Eligibility: Citizens of many countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries, don’t need a visa for short stays. However, check the official Portuguese immigration website to confirm if your country requires a Schengen visa.
  • Application Process: If required, apply at the Portuguese embassy or consulate in your home country. Provide proof of travel purpose, accommodation, financial means, and travel insurance.

Long-Stay Visas (National Visas)

  • Purpose: Stays exceeding 90 days, including work, study, retirement, or family reunification.
  • Types: Several types of national visas are available, each with specific requirements. Some of the common ones include:
    • D2 Visa (Entrepreneurs and Self-Employed): For individuals starting a business or working independently in Portugal. Requires a business plan and proof of sufficient funds.
    • D3 Visa (Highly Qualified Workers): For professionals with specialized skills and qualifications. Requires a job offer from a Portuguese company.
    • D7 Visa (Passive Income): For retirees or individuals with sufficient passive income to support themselves in Portugal. Requires proof of regular income, such as pensions or rental income.
    • Golden Visa: For investors making significant investments in Portugal. Offers a fast track to residency.

Golden Visa: A Pathway to Residency (Updated for 2026)

The Golden Visa program is a popular option for non-EU citizens seeking residency in Portugal through investment.

  • Investment Options: Please note that as of recent changes in the law, real estate investment is no longer a qualifying option for the Golden Visa. The currently available investment pathways include:
    • Capital Transfer: Transfer a minimum of €1.5 million into a Portuguese bank account.
    • Job Creation: Create at least 10 new jobs in Portugal.
    • Fund Subscription: Invest a minimum of €500,000 in a qualifying Portuguese investment fund.
    • Research and Development: Invest at least €500,000 in research and development activities in Portugal.
    • Cultural Heritage Preservation: Invest at least €250,000 in the preservation of Portuguese cultural heritage.
  • Benefits:
    • Residency Permit: You and your family members can obtain a renewable residence permit.
    • Minimal Stay Requirement: You only need to stay in Portugal for an average of 7 days per year to maintain your residency status.
    • Path to Citizenship: After 10 years of legal residency (7 years for EU and CPLP nationals), you may be eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship. The residency clock starts from the date your residence permit is issued. You’ll also need to demonstrate A2-level Portuguese and pass a test on Portuguese history, culture, and basic rights.
    • Visa-Free Travel: Enjoy visa-free travel within the Schengen Area.

Application Process for the Golden Visa

  1. Choose Your Investment: Select the investment option that best suits your goals and financial situation.
  2. Gather Documents: Prepare the necessary documentation, including proof of investment, identification, and background checks.
  3. Apply Online: Submit your application through AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo), the agency that replaced SEF in 2023.
  4. Schedule an Appointment: Attend an in-person biometrics appointment at AIMA.
  5. Receive Your Residence Permit: If approved, you’ll receive your residence permit, which is initially valid for two years and can be renewed for successive three-year periods.
